Of course I'm referring to the musical galaxy. As Galaxy Kid, I try to bring a lot to the table. Anything goes. As long as I'm feeling it. Lately I've been into disco, old and new. There wasn't a lot of preparation for this mix. I just bought a new laptop and installed Ableton on it and just grabbed some tunes that were already on my thumb drive. This is the result. (It's not mastered by any means so if the volume levels track to track change, my deepest apologies) I haven't been loving DJing too much lately and it was nice to be able to not worry about getting people in the door of a club and make sure they're dancing and drinking and happy so that the bar staff would be happy with me. I was able to just worry about what gets me moving in my rolly chair. Which believe me, I was. Stay tuned for Volume 2 which will undoubtedly be slow and sexy. As a designer, it's hard for me to look at things that already exist naturally and say "hmm that would make a good photo" I guess I like to rearrange. organize or even stage elements. That's not to say I don't respect photography, on the contrary, I have the utmost respect for it because I can't do it. I understand it, I just don't feel I can do the media justice I suppose. This site was sent to me by an old friend who thought I'd enjoy it. In response to his instant message I said this:

if i was a photographer this is exactly the kind of photography i'd take. even the photos i've dabbled in where all compositions of architecture and corridors and the like. and i have always been fascinated by abandoned places. so many stories. thanks for sharing this site. i'll probably blog about it.
So that being said, please enjoy these photos. I find them creepy, awe inspiring, and composed extremely well. Using the original interview recording as the soundtrack, director Josh Raskin has woven a visual narrative which tenderly romances Lennon's every word in a cascading flood of multipronged animation. Raskin marries the terrifyingly genius pen work of James Braithwaite with masterful digital illustration by Alex Kurina, resulting in a spell-binding vessel for Lennon's boundless wit, and timeless message.

White Williams _ smoke

So yesterday I was talking to my pal over at Books And Blood about Kid606 and his label Tigerbeat6. I believe it was while I was in finals week actually. I had lots to do so I just decided to put it on in the background of whatever I was doing (pretty sure I was doing my report on IKEA actually) and I eventually found myself just staring off into space with my mouth gaped open in awe of how great this mix was. It's a short one but that just gives it more of a "good track to length" ratio... or something. So I thought I'd showcase a very talented friend of mine whom I've known since high school. His name is Chris Horst and he's been a metalhead for as long as I've known him. I remember one of my first encounters with him at Scarlet Oaks Vocational where I was listening to my walkman at lunch. He asked me what I was listening to. At the time I thought it was just a ploy on his part to make fun of whatever non-metal music I was listening to but in time I realized that he was truly interested in music. I was listening to Exit Planet Dust by The Chemical Brothers on a mix tape I had made. I recall him kind of scoffing and saying it sounded like video game music. I later wore a Depeche Mode t-shirt to school one day and we immediately began chatting about the band. He was not very familiar with their material but was interested in checking them out so I made him a tape. (haha it feels funny saying I made him a tape, I feel old) Thusly, this headbanger was introduced to electronic music.

Chris has always had an eye for typography and is a master at using letter forms in creative ways. This fascination, of course, came from his love of metal and the lavishly illustrative album covers and logos the bands he loved had dawned. Recently, He has been honing his skills by giving away free metal logos to bands on myspace. In a little over three weeks he has designed logos for over 20 different bands, some more established as others. Why free? It's all about getting his name, and his own breed of self proclaimed "power sludge", out into the ears and eyes of fellow headbangers on the world wide web. He plans to eventually become legit and make some big bank off his work but until then he's honing his craft, networking, and making the world just a bit more metal.

I challenged him to do a science fiction themed logo for my electro side project; Galaxy Kid. He accepted the challenge and I am very pleased with the outcome.

For more of his work, both visual and aural. I've been exposed to Reggae ever since my parents went to Jamaica for vacation in the late '80s. My mom brought back a cassette of this dude named Bob Marley. I was never a huge fan of Mr. Marley but I particularly liked the production on some of the earlier Wailers recordings, specifically the "Burnin'" album. It was really interesting because at that time, my brother was listening to a lot of Shabba Ranks and Buju Banton which was an evolution of what my mom was listening to with The Wailers. What I'm getting at is that I really like to compare the two sounds and how there were produced. Electronic vs. Non-electronic, if you will. I enjoy dancehall music that embraces electronics and doesn't try to make the synthesizers sound like real instruments, but my favorite style is Roots and Dub which is mostly done with non-electronic instrumentation, but then with Dub it is processed through tons of effects; mostly analog.

Anyway, today I was sifting through a 6 disc CD-R set my brother made me a few months back, the first time I really got to check it out. Out of the 70 some odd tracks, I only really enjoyed a handful. All of which were older and more pure in their production. The vocals are very important too. A lot of it just sounded like sweet love songs with an upbeat piano hit. Not my cup of tea. But I did stumble across a huge classic from the 80s; Tenor Saw's "Ring the Alarm." It has been sampled time and time again over the years by a plethora of artists but none still compare with the original. Much like one of my all time favorites, Barrington Levy, Tenor Saw has a very unique and oddly comforting voice. The groove isn't anything to shake a stick at either; absolutely infectious! Tenor's career was only a short 3 years. In August 1988, his body was found at the side of the road outside Houston, perhaps victim of a hit and run, but his legacy lives on through this track if not any other. Until I can find more Tenor Saw material, a task that proves more and more difficult by the hour, I would like to share this track with you. Enjoy.

Tenor Saw – "Ring the Alarm" - 4.1 mb | download here

Tenor Saw on Discogs

Tenor Saw on Wikipedia

The Lost AERO Session

Yesterday I was at my parents' place for Mother's Day. I was in my dad's studio and stumbled across a CD-R with "AERO 003" on it. I was like "How is this possible? Did I give my father a copy of Yasuharu Motomiya's AERO mix?" No I hadn't. Turns out I was in the process of putting together a mix for the AERO Space Sessions. It was never finished. This is a rough mix of what was going to become AERO 003. We'll just call it AERO 002.5; The Lost Session. This mix was probably done about a year ago. My DJ skills weren't all that great and my mixing abilities have since improved drastically. It's mediocre at best. This is another Scandinavian band that I've been obsessing over for about a year now. They're part of a "movement" of a new breed of shoegaze artists emerging out of Europe (coined as "newgaze") and have released quite a lot of material over a relatively short period of time. They've been together since 1995 but didn't put anything out until 2002 (on Labrador). They have a very mellow and comforting sound. I often find myself listening to their music as I fall asleep or just want to relax and be introspective. So don't expect any dance hits or huge rock anthems. This is perfect at home (or at work) listening. I discovered them via the Marie Antoinette soundtrack which was randomly dropped onto my hard drive by a Mr. Kevin Frey. I said "Hey I have most of this stuff." To which he responded "Do you got that Radio Dept.?" I was intrigued. They have 3 tracks on it. I'm excited about the new single, hopefully that means new album! I'll post the new single and their 2003 debut full-length "Lesser Matters" (which was released on XL Recording a year later). Enjoy! PS–School is coming to a close, meaning podcasts are coming soon. So hold them horses!

The Radio Dept. "Freddie and the Trojan Horse" single (pictured above)

01 Freddie and the Trojan Horse
02 Closing scene
03 The room, Tarzana

Release date: June 4

The Radio Dept. Lesser Matters (pictured right)

01 Too Soon
02 Where Damage Isn't Already Done
03 Keep On Boys
04 Why Won't You Talk About It
05 It's Been Eight Years
06 Bus
07 Slottet #2
08 1995
09 Against The Tide
10 Strange Things Will Happen
11 Your Father
12 Ewan
13 Lost And Found

full album zip – 64.6 mb | download here

RCP Singles Re-branding

As many of you already know, I help run a small independent digital electronic music label called Race Car Productions. I serve as vice president and art director among other duties such as recording artist. It's a fun little hobby that has turned into a monster and pretty much takes over our lives, but we love it and wouldn't trade it for the world. Currently I'm working on re-branding the packaging and cover art for our singles. Being that we're only a digital label (releasing through such avenues as iTunes, Beatport, and Juno Download just to name a few), the cover art is merely reduced to a 800x800 pixel jpg on the sites where we sell our music. That being said there isn't a whole lot of experimentation I can explore with things such as packaging of records or CDs. However, for this project, I'm mocking up a record sleeve series for our upcoming singles for my Illustration class. It's been a lot of fun so far and I can't wait to do more. I would tell you more about the music but I'll do that closer to the release date. I'll also explain more of my design strategy when the entire project is done.

This is the front.

Whilst this is the back.

x0xb0x demo

A friend of mine showed me this this morning. I say kind of because I'm not 100% happy with it and think it needs more work but it was due this morning so hopefully my professor doesn't feel the same way. All the characters in this composition were drawn by hand, scanned in, and vectorized the old school way in Photoshop and then exporting the work paths to Illustrator, which I think works loads better than auto trace in Illustrator.
As I said, I wasn't 100% happy with the illustrations so I started to redraw the characters in Illustrator but it ended up looking too clean especially when put next to the album cover artwork. I do, however think the clean version looks awesome on it's own. Here it is.

I feel like I really honed in on something with this project, perfected a technique that I've been dabbling with for awhile. So even though I don't feel like it's fully complete, I'm happy with it.

Oh and P.S.: The word "especially" has no "x" in it. Neither does "Et cetera." I was given the task of doing a project for school about whatever we wanted. So instead of doing it about music or kung fu or animal rights or some other nerdy thing (well I guess this is nerdy too), I decided to continue with the environmental thing and talk about an issue that is relatively new to me but I think is very important and relevant in today's cyber culture. Har har! This is one element of the project; a poster series. I will also be doing a guerrilla style sticker campaign to slap on old computers and dumpsters telling people the proper way to dispose of electronics, and in store signage which will be a lot like these poster but with more "how to" information on them. I might design a website layout for www.electr-cycle.com as well. I was going to talk about my top 5 martial arts films of all time but there really isn't time. I'm basing this list on the overall creativity and innovation of the choreography. Whether the scene was particularly relevant to the story or not isn't necessarily important. Let's begin.

The Magnificent Butcher (1979)
Directed and Choreographed by Yuen Woo-Ping

This scene has always been one of my favorites. The use of the calligraphy pens as weapons, the relentless rhythm of the movement of the actors, and of course the agility of Kwan Tak-Hing who plays Wong Fei-Hung. I mean this man has been doing movies since the 40s for crying outloud. This movie is full of great scenes, and it's hilarious to boot. Sometimes for the wrong reasons though, there's a villain who thinks he's a cat. It's pathetic. Then of course there's the token fan fighter wearing eye-liner and is vain as hell. Other than that it's a good fun film.

Wing Chun (1994)
Directed and Choreographed by Yuen Woo-Ping

Oh Michelle Yeoh! Oh tofu! This scene is just ridiculous. But I love it! I think it is real a testament to how creative action director Yuen Woo-Ping is. He'll take any situation and use the environment to his advantage, whether for comedic effect or to communicate what the characters are going through; desperation, determination, et cetera. I hope this'll will at the very least put a smile on your face. Lighten up and enjoy!

Iron Monkey (1993)
Directed and Choreographed by Yuen Woo-Ping

This scene is a lot of fun! It depicts Chinese Folk Hero Wong Fei-Hung as a child getting into a bit of a spat with some thugs. Of course Wong Fei-Hung is a recurring character in Chinese folklore and was actually a real person. His life has been chronicled in many films and many big Chinese stars have played him, including Jet Li (Once Upon a Time In China series) and Jackie Chan (Drunken Master series). This film is unique because it is one of the only instances (that I'm aware of) where Fei-Hung is written as a child; although in Drunken Master he was a teenager. Anyway, this scene is great!

Once Upon A Time In China II (1992)
Directed by Tsui Hark; Choreographed by Yuen Woo-Ping

Donnie Yen and Jet Li! I don't think I need to say anything more than that. Very creative use of bamboo (especially at the end) and Donnie Yen's "Cloth Staff" technique is absolutely insane! People didn't understand why I was so excited to see them face off again in Zhang Yimou's 2002 epic Hero. But hopefully this will explain why I was anticipating it so much. That scene is gorgeous too but this has much more raw energy. Please ignore Foon's fake queue. It always bugs me when I watch OUATIC2. At least Jet Li has the gumption to shave his head so it looks better.

The Young Master (1980)
Directed by Jackie Chan; Choreographed by Jackie Chan & Fung Hak-On

I couldn't finish this list without a Jackie Chan scene. He gets a bad rap a lot because of his concentration in comedy, but he does it so well. This is kind of a complicated scene to explain but of course just as a lot of films in the genre, there is a case of mistaken identity, I'm not exactly sure what the Chinese's fascination is with this concept but I won't bore you with trying to explain what's going on. Basically the old guy is a cop who thinks Jackie is a criminal. Jackie just escaped from the cop and ended up at this house where a young woman let him in to shower and get cleaned up. Turns out the woman is the daughter of the cop that he just fled from. She then gets home from the store and finds her house guest fighting with her father. Confusing huh? Many of the bands on Labrador are a perfect blend of pop, alternative, and shoegaze, sometimes even 60s doo wop and Motown. I stumbled upon this band called The Mary Onettes, they're sound is very unique of other bands on the label because it's much darker, yet pop as all get out. They vaguely remind me of Editors but with more of an 80s influence. There are many other great bands on the label, and elsewhere in Sweden, but I'll go into that later. This'll be the first installment of my Music from Scandinavia sub-series, starting.... now! For now here's a few selections from their self-titled album.

The Mary Onettes – s/t (Labrador)

01 Pleasure songs
02 Lost
03 Void
04 The Laughter
05 Slow
06 The Companion
07 Explosions
08 Henry
09 Under the guillotine
10 Still

Kyle Geiger Poster

At long last I have some original design to show. If not, go find out. Budding young producer Andrew Bowen (aka Teef) is Mattie "Mossmoss" Bowen's younger brother. Andrew and I have been conversing back and forth on AIM for a month or so now. He's constantly bouncing ideas off of me and letting me hear what he's working on and I have to say that it's some high quality stuff. Good things are to come from Teef.

For your listening enjoyment I asked his permission to share a mix of his with you all today. But I am pissed at myself for not going back any further than their 2002 landmark lp You Forget It In People until now. Now don't get me wrong I love that album dearly, but a year prior to releasing this opus they released their debut; Feel Good Lost and I can't believe it's the same band! Ambient overtones, texture-providing beats (both electronic and acoustic), atmospheric samples of hustle and bustle streets, and.... no vocals?! Well hardly anyway.

One would think that a band such as BSS with roughly 16 members and hot commodities such as (Leslie) Feist and Kevin Drew would dare not to release an instrumental debut. However, who even knows what their line-up was like back in 2001. This is not your average urban outfitters shoppers' Broken Social Scene. To me it makes more sense as to why their indie pop gems are so damn good in the first place. There's a genius behind this band, but which of the million members is it? It boggles my mind just to wonder how they get through one band practice smoothly.

Without any further ado, here are 2 of my personal favorite, more ambient tracks from Feel Good Lost, and of course a zip of the full album. Enjoy!

01 I Slept With Bonhomme At The CBC
02 Guilty Cubicles
03 Love And Mathematics
04 Passport Radio
05 Alive In '85
06 Prison Province
07 Blues For Uncle Gibb
08 Stomach Song
09 Mossbraker
10 Feel Good Lost
11 Last Place
12 Cranley's Gonna Make It

full album zip – 79.9 mb | download here

Love Will Tear... Although all the songs are covers and it was recorded in drummer Noam's home studio somewhere in rural Massachusetts, I feel like they captured new essences to these songs that only they could do. They never cease to amaze me. And I'm very fortunate and privileged to be acquainted with them. Seeing them live is always a treat, on stage and off. They're heading off to Europe at the moment and I wish them the best of luck across the pond. Here's the EP and a preliminary remix I've been working on in my downtime.
